Spring 2018 Newsletter

April 24, 2018

Greetings BCPA members!

Spring is about new beginnings, so I’m eager to introduce the 2018 Executive Committee, who are already hard at work, planning upcoming events that will be posted at http://bexarpsyc.wpengine.com/events/ throughout the year. The Treasurer’s role remains open, so if you are interested in serving in this capacity, contact us at bexarpsych@gmail.com.

In case you missed it, Winter Social provided a great opportunity to catch up with colleagues and friends and celebrate BCPA’s contributions in 2017. We honored Dr. Geoff Gentry as our Fellow of the Year, highlighting his many professional contributions to our community.  We are grateful to everyone who participated in our Dress for Success professional clothing drive. Several of you walked away with great raffle prizes! We learned that Dr. Worsham was the longest-standing BCPA member at the social, and he imparted his wisdom and encouraged psychologists to stay involved in advocacy issues. We’ve included a Member Spotlight at http://bexarpsyc.wpengine.com/spring-2018-member-spotlight/, highlighting Dr. Worsham’s contributions to our field, as well as a few things you might not know about him. Check it out!

Speaking of advocacy, BCPA continues to work with TPA on important legislative issues affecting Texas psychologists. Dr. Folensbee and I met with my Representative, Dr. Phillip Cortez, last month to discuss our desire to maintain an independent board, which will be voted on during the Sunset Commission. Dr. Cortez was extremely receptive and I encourage you all to reach out to your legislators as soon as possible. Please contact bexarpsych@gmail.com if you need guidance on talking points. BCPA is also coordinating a trip to the State Capitol on April 25th to attend the Sunset Commission hearing. Please email bexarpsych@gmail.com and use the subject line LEGISLATIVE for trip details and travel coordination. We look forward to TPA Executive Director, David White, coming to San Antonio on May 9th to summarize their legislative work and inform Bexar County Psychologists on ways get involved. Finally, I want to highlight upcoming events for BCPA members in 2018. We are excited to offer free admission to our spring Ethics CE event on May 23rd! Space is limited so register soon. We are also gauging interest in an EPPP study group. For more information, email us at bexarpsych@gmail.com. In addition to these events, stay on the lookout for networking, volunteer, mentoring, and advocacy events throughout the year. We hope to re-energize those of you who have been with the organization for many years, as well as encourage psychologists who have never been members to give BCPA a try! As always, check www.bexarpsyc.org frequently for information on community and member events and all things BCPA, including how to register for the free spring CE event! Here you can also update your member profile so that your professional information is available for referrals and consultation. And, don’t forget to follow us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/bexarpsyc.

Looking forward to an exciting 2018!

Amanda Wetegrove-Romine, PsyD
